  • Park Circle History

Developed in 1912, Park Circle served as a working-class neighborhood of modest single-family homes for the workers of the area’s factories and nearby Naval Base.

According to The Historical Marker Database, “One of the first modern planned communities in S.C., this 1500-acre development was completed shortly before World War II and grew with the wartime activity at the Charleston Navy Yard.”

GARCO, an asbestos factory, employed many residents throughout the 1900s, but closed in the 1980s. This closure, along with the closure of the Navy Base in 1996, was a hit to Park Circle’s economy and the area suffered.

In the 2000s the Park Circle neighborhood regained popularity. Restaurants, bars, and families began to again see its potential with the walkability, parks and green space, and the lively East Montague strip. Since then, Park Circle has been the crown jewel of North Charleston and continues to gain popularity and property value.
